In Memoriam - Doug Fraser (1916 - 2008) was a great labor leader and a great humanitarian. He was widely respected for his intellect, toughness at the bargaining table, and his life-long devotion to the quest for dignity and improved lives for all working people. The faculty and staff of the Reuther Library and Wayne State University are saddened by his passing, but have been privileged to know and work with Doug.

Douglas A. Fraser, former president of the UAW, dedicated a life time of hard work and exceptional leadership to improving the workplace, the labor-management environment and the work lives of generations of people across all walks of life in our broader community. Adhering to fundamental principles that all people must be treated fairly, with dignity and respect, and afforded a democratic voice in the workplace.
To honor Doug for his leadership in improving the workplace of today and to carry on his good name to improve the workplace of tomorrow, the Douglas A. Fraser Center for Workplace Issues was chartered by Wayne State University in 1998.
Thanks to major gifts from the UAW, General Motors, DaimlerChrysler Corporation, and Ford Motor Company and generous gifts from other organizations and individuals, a sizable endowment has been established that ensures the Fraser Center's future.
